What Is an Allergy Specialist?

An allergy specialist — formally known as a consultant allergist or specialist in clinical immunology — is a physician with postgraduate training in diagnosing and treating allergic, immune-mediated and related inflammatory conditions. In the United Kingdom, consultant allergists are recognised by the General Medical Council (GMC) on the specialist register and typically hold fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians or equivalent.

A specialist consultation goes significantly beyond what a GP can offer. Rather than treating symptoms in isolation, an allergy consultant undertakes a detailed clinical history, identifies the specific allergen or immune trigger, and designs a personalised management plan — which may include advanced diagnostic testing, allergen immunotherapy, biologic medicines or other evidence-based treatments.

Our team follows current guidance from the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI), the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) and the World Allergy Organisation (WAO), including the updated 2026 ARIA-EAACI guidelines for allergic rhinitis and the 2025 EAACI guidelines for IgE-mediated food allergy management.

Our consultants cover the full breadth of conditions at the intersection of allergy, immunology and related specialties, providing a genuinely integrated approach when symptoms overlap across organ systems.

✦ Allergy & Clinical Immunology

Adult and paediatric allergy, complex IgE-mediated conditions, primary immunodeficiencies, anaphylaxis management, food allergy, venom allergy, drug allergy.

Dermatology

Atopic eczema, contact dermatitis, urticaria (hives), angioedema, allergic skin reactions and chronic inflammatory skin conditions in adults and children.

Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT)

Allergic rhinitis, chronic rhinosinusitis, nasal polyps, non-allergic rhinitis, chronic cough and upper airway conditions managed in conjunction with our allergy specialists.

Chest Medicine & Respiratory

Allergic asthma, severe asthma assessment, sleep-disordered breathing and pulmonary conditions with an allergic or immunological component.

Paediatric Allergy

Specialist assessment for infants, children and adolescents with food allergy, eczema, asthma, hay fever and anaphylaxis, with child-friendly consultation environments.

Immunology

Hereditary angioedema (HAE), primary and secondary immunodeficiencies, recurrent infections and autoimmune conditions requiring specialist immunological evaluation.

Conditions Our Allergy Specialists Treat

We assess and treat the full spectrum of allergic and immunological conditions in adults and children:

Hay fever & allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)   Anaphylaxis — diagnosis, risk assessment & prevention
Food allergy (peanut, tree nut, milk, egg, shellfish, sesame, wheat)   Atopic eczema & allergic contact dermatitis
Asthma — allergic and difficult-to-control   Chronic urticaria (hives) & angioedema
Drug & medication allergy (including antibiotic and anaesthetic)   Insect venom allergy (bee and wasp)
Oral allergy syndrome (pollen-food allergy)   Allergic conjunctivitis
Hereditary angioedema (HAE) & mast cell disorders   Primary immunodeficiency & recurrent infections
Pet (cat, dog) and environmental allergen sensitivity   Latex allergy

Advanced Allergy Testing & Diagnostics

Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective allergy management. We use validated, evidence-based investigations and do not offer unproven or alternative diagnostic methods. Our testing repertoire currently covers more than 600 allergens for food and airborne triggers.

ALEX³ Component-Resolved Diagnostics (CRD)

Our standard advanced blood test screens up to 300 allergen components in a single sample. CRD identifies which specific proteins within a food or airborne allergen are triggering your immune response — a critical distinction for risk stratification. For example, sensitisation to the peanut protein Ara h 2 is associated with severe systemic reactions, whereas sensitisation to Ara h 8 typically indicates the milder oral allergy syndrome. Standard IgE blood tests alone cannot make this distinction. Available in clinic and as a home postal kit, with results reviewed by your consultant.

Skin Prick Testing (SPT)

Same-day in-clinic testing for food and environmental allergens using standardised validated extracts. Performed and interpreted by an allergy specialist on the same visit, enabling a diagnostic and management discussion at a single appointment.

Supervised Food Challenge

The gold standard for confirming or excluding food allergy. Carefully supervised incremental food challenges are conducted in clinic with full emergency facilities available, following BSACI protocols.

Total IgE, Specific IgE & Extended Immunological Panels

Comprehensive laboratory allergy blood testing including total and specific IgE, tryptase, complement studies, immunoglobulin quantification and specialist panels for immunodeficiency assessment, where clinically indicated.

Home Postal Allergy Testing

For patients unable to attend clinic, self-collection testing kits are available via
foodallergytest.co.uk.
Results are reviewed by a consultant and discussed at a follow-up video appointment, ensuring clinical interpretation rather than an automated report.

Treatments & Evidence-Based Interventions

Following diagnosis, your allergy specialist will design a personalised treatment plan. This may include one or more of the following evidence-based approaches:

Allergen Immunotherapy (AIT) — The Only Disease-Modifying Treatment for Allergy

Allergen immunotherapy remains the only class of treatment that can modify the underlying immune response driving allergic disease, rather than solely suppressing symptoms. It is MHRA-licensed, NICE-approved and recommended by BSACI, EAACI and AAAAI guidelines. We offer:

Subcutaneous Immunotherapy (SCIT) — Administered by injection in clinic under supervision. Standard for respiratory and venom allergy.

Sublingual Immunotherapy (SLIT) — Daily tablet or liquid drops taken at home following an initial supervised dose. The updated 2026 ARIA-EAACI guidelines and a 2025 meta-analysis of over 1,800 patients confirm SLIT significantly reduces allergic rhinitis symptoms, with benefits persisting up to six years after completing treatment.

Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) — Structured programmes for selected food allergies including peanut, milk, egg, sesame, wheat and selected tree nuts, helping patients achieve desensitisation and sustained tolerance under specialist supervision. Recommended by 2025 EAACI food allergy guidelines for children and adolescents with peanut allergy.

Biologic Therapies — Omalizumab (anti-IgE) and other biologic pathways are assessed for eligible patients with severe chronic urticaria, difficult asthma, and complex food allergy. Our UCARE and ACARE accreditation confirms our capability to prescribe and monitor omalizumab and specialist HAE biologics. Suitability depends on diagnosis, age, risk profile, licensing status and specialist assessment.

EURneffy (Neffy) Adrenaline Nasal Spray — MHRA approved in July 2025 as a needle-free emergency treatment for anaphylaxis. Our consultants can assess your suitability and prescribe this option alongside or instead of traditional auto-injectors.

Venom Immunotherapy — Specialist desensitisation programmes for bee and wasp venom allergy, significantly reducing the risk of future systemic reactions.

Drug Desensitisation — Supervised protocols to allow patients with confirmed drug allergy to safely receive necessary medications where no alternative exists.

Personalised Medication Plans — Antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, topical treatments and inhaled therapies prescribed within an evidence-based, individually tailored management plan.
